First day of school

I thought that the children would be nervous about the first day of school but I was so wrong. The day before school and I was a nervous wreck (like I am every first day of school). But like every first day of school, evening, I was fine and I had worried about nothing. The children were lovely (as I expected), well-mannered, ready to work and keen to be here and to get to know me, their teacher. The first day bell rings. All children remember that it is assembly first thing. I go to tell my children to pack up what they have played with and line up; low and behold most of them have already done that and are waiting for me. Oh wow!!!I didn't really have to do anything because they already know the kaupapa. Well done class. We are the first class to be waiting at the hall for everyone to arrive (as usual), so we decide to set up all the chairs (as usual) and wait. As I look around at all my last year's children walk in with all their correct uniform, I think back to last year when they were sitting in the same place as my new class this year; nervous, excited, newbies overwhelmed/ underwhelmed and the same old/ new ones talking instead of waiting quietly for two children, usually from the Rumaki class, to do karakia and for Matua Raz to start his welcome speech. I look around and notice that there is not many children at school today and in the junior syndicate there are only about 30 children all up. Still a lot of children missing but I guess that most children will be back in week 2. Aah, what to do first? School rules (three only), School values (five only), class expectation, what what what to do first? So many things so little time and the children are fairly little too. Are the powers that be sure that these very little people should be here? oh that's right I wanted to have a year 2/3 class this year. Oh well they are all lovely and attentive. Is this the honeymoon period or what? and for how long? Day two people bring it on!!!!
